THE STORY

I was standing on the headland when I had a vision of Ruby standing on this rock below me. I could already see the photograph before it existed — the composition, the light, the scale of the landscape around her.

Then I heard laughter behind my shoulder.

A school group was making their way up the headland on an excursion.

I looked down at Ruby, who was completely naked, and yelled out to her. She jumped off the rock, and in that brief moment, I took the shot.

There was no elaborate production. No perfect setup. Just instinct, timing and a willingness to let the experience shape the art.

That’s something I love about photography — sometimes the most meaningful images aren’t the ones you plan. They’re the ones that happen when you’re simply present enough to recognise them.

This photograph has since become part of the visual identity of Native State, appearing on their billboard in Kirra.

What began as an instinctive moment on a spring afternoon has become an image that lives far beyond that day.

This is why I make prints.

Because a photograph shouldn’t only exist on a screen. It should carry the story of where it came from, and become something you can live with.

This image was shot on film, therefore grain & imperfections may be present, more-so in larger prints. This is the nature of film photography.
